Off-Campus Apartments Near NSU in Tahlequah: A Student's Guide

Cassie Ogorzalek • October 22, 2026

Moving off campus at Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah gives you more space, your own kitchen, and sometimes room for a pet. Here's what to weigh, where 5 Dogs Properties has apartments near campus, and how to tour.

On campus or off campus at NSU?

It comes down to what you need. Off campus usually means more privacy, a full kitchen and the chance to bring a pet. On campus keeps you closest to class and simple to budget.

Things to compare:

  • Privacy: more privacy than a shared dorm room.
  • Pets: NSU residence halls don't allow pets (fish are allowed). Service and support animals go through NSU's disability accommodation process.
  • Cooking: a full kitchen vs. a meal plan.
  • Lease length: our standard lease is 12 months.
  • Utilities: some rentals include bills, some don't. Ask before you sign.

First, check whether you can move off campus. NSU requires most first-time freshmen under 21 to live on campus their first year, with exemptions (for example, living with a parent within 30 miles). Check NSU Housing's current policy.

Checklist before you sign a lease

Ask these before you sign anything:

  • Utilities: which bills are included, and about how much do the others run?
  • Laundry: in the unit, on site, or a laundromat?
  • Parking: is there a spot for you, and does it cost extra?
  • Roommates: is everyone on the lease, and how is rent split?
  • Move-in timing: when does the lease start, and does it line up with the semester?
  • Maintenance: who do you call when something breaks, and how?
  • Co-signer and income requirements: we decide these case by case, so just ask.
  • Deposit: how much is it, and how do you get it back? In Oklahoma, after you move out and hand back the keys, ask for your deposit in writing. The landlord has 45 days after that to return it, minus any itemized deductions (41 O.S. §115). Make the written request within 6 months of move-out.
